Oelaba on the island of Rote, Indonesia is a pretty special little village. The men in general are away for 10-11 months of the year. They have a very long history of fishing the waters around Ashmoore reef and although this area is nowadays part of Australia the men from this village still have the right to fish there so long as they do it in a traditional way. This means no engines, electronic navigation etc. They sail their handmade boats the 300km across the ocean and stay down there fishing for around 6 months, totally isolated. Thier boats are called “widow-makers” with good reason as many never come home again. At the end of the fishing season they sail home then install thier engines and head off on a 1000km trip to Sulawesi to transport timber back to Rote. We had a really interesting day visiting this unique village.
