Hooray, we’ve put the sanders down!! For a few days anyway. Now that we’re in that sweet spot of temperature, we can get to vacuum bagging some of the larger items for our catamaran.

We go to work building the structural beam which will sit at the back of our cabin top. Since our traveler will sit above this and be bolted through into it, we need to make sure it is very strong.

Starting with a 4×8 sheet of coosa board, (a very dense foam), we cut it down into strips 3″ wide and then stagger joints to get an overall length of 10.5′. Then we stack them on top of each other to make 7 layers.

Bonding this all together involves our thickened resin to start, and then multiple layers of both unidirectional and double biased fiberglass. It’s been nearly a year since we’ve last done any vacuum bagging and hopefully we haven’t lost our touch!

We hope you enjoy!
